The Squirrel's Appetite
Squirrels eat many things. Most squirrels are actually vegetarians. Except the flying squirrel. The flying squirrel will eat small birds and insects.Naughty flying squirrels will even steal bird eggs from a nest to make a meal. Generally, squirrels will mainly stick to eating things vegetarian related. Their main diet is nuts, seeds, fruits, lichens, buds, mushrooms, roots, pine cones, leaves, twigs, bark, black walnuts, oranges, avocados, apples, and apricots. One of their favorite food items is corn on the cob that is dried and hung up for them. Squirrels are not picky eaters at all and they will pretty much eat anything that is in front of them as long as it tastes good. This is especially true when it comes to them eating flower bulbs! Different types of squirrels weigh different weights because some eat more than others. An adult grey squirrel will usually weigh between one and one and a half pounds.Flying squirrels only weigh between three and five ounces. Red squirrels weigh more than five or five and a half ounces. A fox squirrel will weigh somewhere around three pounds.
