Squirrels belong to the Sciuridae family. Just like dogs belong to the canine family! The Sciuridae family is full of tree squirrels, ground squirrels, flying squirrels, prairie dogs and marmots. Squirrels talk to each other by many sounds and scent marking. They also use their tail for signaling by twitching it and such. Baby squirrels are born blind. The age when they open their eyes varies with species, but can range from 4 to 7 weeks old. Squirrels can fall up to about a hundred feet without hurting themselves or breaking any bones or anything! The word "Squirrel" came from a word in Greek which is "skiouros" meaning,"shadow tail". Squirrels are double jointed at their hind legs. The African pygmy squirrel is the smallest type of squirrel in the world.It is only five inches tall from its head to its toes. That's only thirteen centimeters!
